The Maranatha Baptist Church was chartered as an AWANA club, a
part of AWANA INTERNATIONAL in 1979. AWANA
INTERNATIONAL is located in Streamwood, IL, and has ministered
to the needs of young people since 1950.
The acronym AWANA comes from the first letters of Approved
Workmen Are Not Ashamed. (II Timothy 2:15)
AWANA began in 1950 as a youth program at the North Side Gospel
Center in Chicago, Illinois. Lance Latham, the church pastor, worked
with Art Rorheim to develop a program that would appeal to young
people, reach them with the gospel of Christ and train them in the Lord's
work. Other churches heard about the success of the AWANA
program and asked if they could use it. By 1960, AWANA had
registered 900 clubs.
Today, there are more than 10,000 churches in the United States that
have AWANA clubs. There are clubs in all 50 states. AWANA can
also be found in over 3,000 churches in 110 other countries.
At Maranatha, we have AWANA clubs for children age three through
the twelfth grade. Our club runs from the middle of September through
the middle of May of each year.
AWANA meets every Wednesday evening beginning promptly at 7:00
p.m. and dismissing promptly at 8:45 p.m. The structure of the club is
built around three different concepts: a game/social time, a
handbook/individual work time, and a Bible lesson time. Additional
opportunities provided by AWANA include various outings and service
opportunities throughout the year.
We have approximately 40 AWANA leaders, led by Commander Glenn
Parker, who have a love for children and labor faithfully throughout the
AWANA year seeking to honor our Lord in working with our youth.
Our children enjoy this youth program immensely and many bring friends
to get them involved. It is fun, exciting, and, most of all brings the Word
of God into the hearts and lives of these young people.
You are welcome to come and experience our AWANA program! We
would love to have you and show you and your family around!
