Acts 20:28 — “Take heed therefore unto yourselves, and to all the flock, over the which the Holy Ghost hath made you overseers, to feed the church of God, which he hath purchased with his own blood.”
Paul’s words to the Ephesian elders highlight both the seriousness and the blessing of pastoral ministry. The church belongs to God, purchased with Christ’s blood, and the Holy Spirit appoints shepherds to oversee and feed it. When pastors take heed to themselves and the flock, the church flourishes.
Faithful shepherding produces a thriving church. When the Word is preached, souls are fed; when leaders live in holiness, the body grows in maturity; when pastors watch diligently, wolves are resisted, and unity is preserved. The strength of the flock is directly tied to the faithfulness of its shepherds.
But the blessing flows both ways. A thriving church encourages and strengthens its pastors. When members grow in faith, respond to truth, and labor alongside their shepherds, the pastor’s burdens are lightened. A faithful flock is a pastor’s joy and crown.
The Spirit’s role is crucial. Pastors are not self-appointed but God-appointed. The church is not a human institution but a divine creation, sealed by the blood of Christ. Recognizing this truth elevates the relationship between shepherd and sheep—it is not merely practical but sacred.
For pastors, this truth demands careful self-examination. They must guard their own lives, lest their sin harm the flock. For the flock, it calls for gratitude, recognizing that their pastor is not merely a man but a Spirit-given gift.
A church that thrives under faithful shepherding is a powerful witness. The world sees a community transformed, fed, and united. Such a church is living proof that Christ is alive, His Word is powerful, and His design for shepherd and sheep brings blessing.
