Proverbs 18:24 — “A man that hath friends must shew himself friendly: and there is a friend that sticketh closer than a brother.”
Friendship is one of God’s sweetest gifts. Proverbs teaches that the foundation of true friendship is faithfulness. A man who desires friends must first be friendly—open, kind, and willing to invest. But beyond human companionship, there is a special kind of friend described: one who sticks closer than a brother.
Human friendships, though precious, can sometimes falter under pressure. Brothers may part ways, friends may disappoint, but there is a friendship that endures every trial. Ultimately, this verse points us to Christ, the Friend of sinners, who promises never to leave us nor forsake us.
Christ’s friendship is loyal and steadfast. He bears our burdens, forgives our failures, and walks with us through every valley. When all others fail, He remains faithful. Knowing Him as Friend transforms the way we view earthly relationships, for His love sets the standard of loyalty and sacrifice.
For us, walking in wisdom means being the kind of friend who reflects Christ. True friends love at all times, stand in seasons of trial, and speak truth even when it hurts. Faithful friendship is rare, but it is worth cultivating.
Let us thank God for the friends He has given us, but let us also rejoice in the Friend who sticks closer than a brother. In Him we find the truest example of loyalty, love, and grace.
