Colossians 2:6–7 — “As ye have therefore received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk ye in him: Rooted and built up in him, and stablished in the faith, as ye have been taught, abounding therein with thanksgiving.”
Paul exhorts believers not only to be thankful but to abound in thanksgiving. Gratitude is not an occasional expression but a continual overflow of life rooted in Christ. As we grow in Him, gratitude grows with us.
Our thanksgiving begins with receiving Christ. Salvation is the foundation of gratitude. But it does not stop there—we are called to walk in Him, rooted and built up in faith. Gratitude is not static; it deepens as we mature in Christ.
Paul uses the imagery of a tree: rooted, built up, established. A tree deeply rooted in fertile soil produces abundant fruit. Likewise, a life rooted in Christ produces abundant thanksgiving. Gratitude is the natural fruit of spiritual growth.
For pastors, this truth emphasizes the goal of ministry: to see believers established in faith and overflowing with gratitude. For the flock, it reveals the test of maturity: not knowledge alone but abounding thanksgiving. A thankless Christian is a stagnant Christian.
Abounding thanksgiving is not dependent on circumstances but on Christ. His grace is inexhaustible, His promises unshakable, His presence unchanging. Gratitude flows when our hearts are anchored in Him.
As we close this month of reflection, let us not see gratitude as seasonal but as continual. We are called to abound in thanksgiving every day of the year. Gratitude is not a moment but a lifestyle rooted in Christ.
May our hearts overflow with thanks, our words declare His goodness, and our lives reflect His grace. In Christ, we have every reason to abound with thanksgiving.
