1 Timothy 5:17 — “Let the elders that rule well be counted worthy of double honour, especially they who labour in the word and doctrine.”

Paul teaches that pastors who labor faithfully are worthy of honor, and those who especially labor in preaching and teaching deserve double honor. This is not mere suggestion but divine instruction. God values the work of faithful shepherds and calls His people to do the same.

Honoring pastors involves both respect and provision. Respect is shown in how we speak of them, how we respond to their leadership, and how we support their ministry. Provision is shown in meeting their needs, freeing them from worldly distractions so they can devote themselves fully to the Word.

Sadly, many churches fail in this command. Some neglect their pastors financially, others criticize them harshly, and still others take their labor for granted. Such treatment dishonors God, who esteems faithful shepherds. To honor pastors is to honor the Lord who sent them.

Double honor does not mean idolization. Pastors are not infallible or above accountability. But it does mean intentional gratitude, encouragement, and support. A church that esteems its shepherds highly in love reflects maturity and health.

For pastors, this passage is both encouraging and challenging. Encouraging, because God affirms the value of their labor. Challenging, because the standard is ruling well and laboring diligently in the Word. The honor is tied to faithfulness, not mere position.

When pastors and people honor one another rightly, the church flourishes. Pastors are encouraged, the Word is magnified, and the body is built up in love.
