Matthew 1:20–21 — “But while he thought on these things, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a dream, saying, Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost. And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins.”
Joseph faced a dilemma when he learned that Mary was with child. His natural response was to put her away quietly, but God interrupted his plan with a divine message. The angel explained that Mary’s child was conceived of the Holy Spirit and would save His people from their sins. Joseph’s role was to protect, provide, and name the child Jesus.
Obedience for Joseph meant setting aside fear and doubt. The angel said, “Fear not.” Gratitude for God’s Word gives us courage to obey, even when obedience is costly. Joseph accepted responsibility, trusting that God’s plan was greater than his own.
Naming the child Jesus was an act of obedience and faith. To give that name was to declare belief that this child was the promised Savior. Gratitude grows when we obey God’s Word, even in the face of uncertainty, for obedience brings us into the flow of His plan.
For us, Joseph is a model of quiet faithfulness. He did not seek recognition but simply obeyed. Gratitude for God’s grace should produce humble obedience in our lives as well.
Christmas reminds us that God works through ordinary obedience. Joseph’s choice to trust and obey allowed him to play a vital role in the greatest story ever told. Gratitude reminds us that our obedience, however small, is part of God’s larger design.
