Proverbs 18:21 — “Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof.”
Few things reveal the weight of our words more than this proverb. The tongue has the power to build up or to tear down, to heal or to wound, to bless or to curse. Words may seem small, but their impact is lasting. What we speak has consequences, and we will eat the fruit of what we sow with our lips.
Words can give life by encouraging, comforting, and guiding others toward truth. A kind word can lift a discouraged heart, a gentle answer can defuse anger, and a timely reminder of God’s promises can strengthen faith. On the other hand, careless words can crush, deceive, and lead people astray. One angry outburst or cruel insult can leave scars for years.
Scripture reminds us that our words flow from the heart. If the heart is filled with bitterness, anger, or pride, our speech will reflect it. But if the heart is filled with love, grace, and truth, our words will bring life. Guarding the tongue begins with guarding the heart.
The fruit of the tongue cannot be escaped. Those who love careless talk will reap its damage, while those who use words wisely will enjoy the blessings of peace and trust. In every conversation, we are sowing seeds that will one day bear fruit.
Wisdom calls us to use our words as instruments of life. May our tongues be yielded to Christ, speaking truth with love and grace. The power of the tongue is great, but when surrendered to God, it becomes a channel of blessing.
