Luke 2:49 — “And he said unto them, How is it that ye sought me? wist ye not that I must be about my Father’s business?”

At just twelve years old, Jesus displayed His awareness of His divine mission. Found in the temple, He explained to Mary and Joseph that He must be about His Father’s business. Gratitude grows when we see His early dedication to fulfilling the will of God.

Even in youth, Jesus was committed to His Father’s purpose. His wisdom amazed the teachers, and His devotion foreshadowed the obedience that would lead to the cross. Gratitude for Christmas includes gratitude for the Son who perfectly obeyed on our behalf.

Mary and Joseph did not fully understand, yet they treasured His words. Gratitude sometimes requires faith when understanding is incomplete. Trust grows when we treasure God’s Word, even when it is mysterious.

For pastors, this passage encourages faithfulness to God’s calling. For the flock, it teaches that obedience begins with devotion to God’s will, not our own. Gratitude should move us to prioritize His work above all else.

Christ’s statement reminds us that our lives, too, must be about the Father’s business. Gratitude for salvation should lead us to serve His mission, making His work our priority.

The boy in the temple reminds us that the child in the manger was born for a purpose. Gratitude deepens when we see that every step of His life was directed toward our redemption.
