He or she doesn’t stand behind the pulpit. He or shedoesn’t lead worship or teach Sunday school. But without them, the church wouldn’t run nearly as smoothly. The church janitor—often unnoticed and underappreciated—is a modern-day example of faithful service. He or sheworks behind the scenes, cleaning bathrooms, vacuuming floors, unlocking doors early, and locking them late—all for the glory of God.
Jesus said in Mark 9:35, “If any man desire to be first, the same shall be last of all, and servant of all.” Faithfulness isn’t about being seen. It’s about being steady. The janitor’s ministry isn’t glamorous, but it’s essential. He or she prepares a clean and welcoming place for worship, making it easier for others to meet with God. Their hands carry a quiet kind of holiness.
This unsung hero reminds us that ministry takes many forms. Some are called to preach. Others are called to sweep the sanctuary. Both matter. Both are seen by God. Both will receive a reward if done unto the Lord.
Whether you serve in a similar behind-the-scenes role or not, let this modern example challenge you: serve faithfully, humbly, and joyfully. The Lord sees it all, and He never forgets.
