Proverbs 16:28 — “A froward man soweth strife: and a whisperer separateth chief friends.”
Few sins are as destructive to relationships as gossip. A whisperer—someone who spreads secrets or slanders others—has the power to tear apart even the closest of friendships. Proverbs warns that gossip sows strife, creating division where once there was trust.
Gossip often masquerades as harmless conversation or even concern, but its fruit is always bitter. It damages reputations, fuels misunderstandings, and plants seeds of suspicion. Once words are spoken, they cannot be taken back, and the wounds they cause are deep.
The heart behind gossip is selfish. Whisperers speak to elevate themselves, entertain others, or satisfy curiosity, with little regard for the damage caused. But wisdom teaches us to guard our lips, refusing to pass along information that does not edify.
Instead of gossip, the wise choose discretion. They cover offenses with love, keep confidences faithfully, and speak words that heal rather than harm. True friendship is marked by loyalty, not betrayal.
God Himself hates sowers of discord, for their actions destroy the unity He desires among His people. To walk in wisdom is to use our words to build up, not to tear down. Let us refuse the whispers of gossip and commit ourselves to speech that honors Christ.
