Proverbs 15:27 — “He that is greedy of gain troubleth his own house; but he that hateth gifts shall live.”
The pursuit of dishonest gain has destroyed countless lives and families. Proverbs warns that greed does not just harm the greedy person; it brings trouble to the entire household. Sin is never private. The choices of one affect the lives of many.
Greed blinds people to integrity. In the rush for wealth, they compromise convictions, neglect family, and ignore God. The temporary thrill of gain is followed by lasting regret. Riches gained unjustly never satisfy, and they often lead to broken trust, fractured relationships, and ruined testimonies.
By contrast, the wise person “hateth gifts.” This does not mean despising generosity but rejecting bribes, dishonest profits, and selfish shortcuts. He understands that integrity is far more valuable than temporary gain. God promises that those who walk in righteousness will live, even if they possess less by the world’s standards.
Dishonest gain is foolish because it overlooks eternity. What profit is it to gain the whole world and lose your soul? The treasures of earth are fleeting, but the treasures of righteousness endure forever.
True wealth is found not in possessions but in peace with God, a clean conscience, and a legacy of faithfulness. The wise choose integrity over gain, knowing that dishonesty always costs more than it gives.
