Proverbs 22:1 — “A good name is rather to be chosen than great riches, and loving favour rather than silver and gold.”
Reputation matters. Solomon declares that a good name is more valuable than great riches. Wealth can be lost in a moment, but a name built on integrity endures. It is a treasure that no thief can steal and no market can devalue.
A good name is earned through consistent honesty, faithfulness, and kindness. It is not built overnight, nor is it maintained without effort. Every decision, every word, and every action adds a brick to the structure of our reputation. Over time, the pattern of integrity forms a testimony that others can trust.
By contrast, a reputation of dishonor is costly. Riches cannot buy back trust once it is lost, and influence is destroyed when integrity is compromised. Many have traded a good name for temporary gain, only to regret it for the rest of their lives.
God Himself places great value on names. Throughout Scripture, He honors those who walk faithfully, remembering their names for eternity. More than that, He gives a new name to His children, marking them as His own.
If given the choice between riches and a good name, the wise will always choose the latter. For in God’s eyes, integrity is worth far more than gold. A good name glorifies Him and blesses generations to come.
