In a culture that often downplays authority, God’s command to honor parents still stands strong. “Honour thy father and thy mother; that thy days may be long upon the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee” (Exodus 20:12). This is the only commandment in the Ten Commandments that includes a promise—longevity and blessing.

For children, honoring parents means obedience, respect, and gratitude. For teens, it means listening even when it’s hard. For adults, it means continuing to value, support, and care for aging parents. Honoring doesn’t end with childhood—it evolves, but it never expires.

For parents, this verse is a reminder to live honorably—worthy of respect. We don’t earn perfection, but we can pursue godliness. We model integrity, humility, and grace as we lead our homes. When children see consistency between what we say and how we live, honoring us becomes a natural response.

In a time when family structure is under attack, let’s return to God’s ways. Teaching our children to honor begins with how we model respect, both for God and for each other. Homes built on honor become homes filled with blessing, stability, and peace.
